Danforth Campus faculty are invited to participate in this faculty development program led by Jeremy Goldbach, Faculty Development Fellow in the Office of the Provost. This year’s schedule will address three main topics: cultivating mentors and sponsors, promotion requirements and timelines, and work/life balance. Learning circles for teaching, research, and practice (TRP), early career, and mid-career faculty will take a deeper dive into these topics. The program will culminate with the opportunity for these faculty groups to meet with university leaders over lunch.

Topic Descriptions

Cultivating Mentors & Sponsors

In academia, having mentors, sponsors and champions for your work can make all the difference in navigating challenges and unlocking opportunities. This session will provide insights into identifying mentors and sponsors, fostering those relationships, and differentiating between the two. Guided by senior colleagues from multiple schools, attendees will identify strategies for creating lasting and impactful relationships to propel their academic careers forward. This session is intended for both early and mid-career faculty who are tenure track, teaching, research and practice.

Promotion Requirements and Timelines

This lunch session will cover general tips related to understanding the criteria and processes for academic units within our institution. From understanding the metrics of academic contributions and service commitments to decoding the nuanced timelines set for promotions, this session aims to offer clarity and guidance for faculty members, including break outs for teaching, research and practice faculty, as well as junior and mid-career tenure line faculty.

Work/Life Balance

It’s no secret that the demands of academic life can be challenging, and learning to prioritize, set boundaries, and integrate self-care is essential. Recognizing the unique pressures faced by faculty, this session aims to provide strategies to harmonize scholarly pursuits with personal well-being. Whether balancing endless grading, striving to meet publication deadlines, or juggling class schedules with personal commitments, this session will work to develop actionable solutions and provide opportunities to discuss with colleagues both challenges of academic life and solutions that have worked for your peers. This session is intended for both early and mid-career faculty who are tenure track, teaching, research and practice.
